Here at Milam Chiropractic & Sports Therapy, our skilled team can provide natural relief for headaches and migraines. Headaches are so commonplace that some people seem to think that they're "normal." But there's nothing normal about headache pain that interferes with your daily tasks and makes your life miserable. Migraines can cause debilitating symptoms of a higher order altogether. If you suffer from either of these problems, you need and deserve migraine and headache treatment that addresses the root cause of your discomfort as safely and effectively as possible.
The most frequently encountered type of headache, the tension headache, is aptly named. This form of diffuse head pain, which may vary from mild to excruciating in severity, typically begins with muscle tension in the neck or shoulders. Tense muscles can go into spasm and tug on sensitive tissues and membranes. For instance, when a muscle called the RCPM muscle goes into spasm, it pulls painfully on a tissue at the base of the skull called the dura mater, referring pain signals to the head. While emotional tension and stress can contribute to tight muscles and headache pain, an unbalanced upper body is another culprit. If your skull is not lined up over your cervical spine just right, the resulting muscular strain can make you vulnerable to headaches. This kind of strain may also be due to poor workplace ergonomics or postural habits.
Migraines can be triggered by emotional and physical stress -- and many other factors as well, from changes in the weather to loud sounds, bright lights, particular foods and hormonal changes. This rather mysterious condition seems to involve a drop in the neurotransmitter serotonin, which causes the trigeminal nerve to send abnormal signals to the blood vessels in the head. Migraines symptoms may include vomiting, nausea, light/sound sensitivity, visual "auras" and disabling pain.
Your headache or migraine symptoms will keep coming back if you don't address their cause -- and our Tustin, Santa Ana and Irvine chiropractor at our clinic does exactly that when administering migraine or headache treatment. Dr. Milam can relieve many cases of chronic muscle tightness by correcting cervical spinal alignment via functional chiropractic techniques such as the Pettibon System and Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP). Ergonomic suggestions and strengthening exercises can then help you maintain stress-free posture.
Relieving muscle tension also eliminates one of your potential migraine triggers. We can address others through lifestyle and nutritional counseling to help you avoid those foods, environments and stressors that can initiate a migraine. Best of all, studies indicate that chiropractic adjustment can reduce both the intensity and the frequency of migraine attacks.
